Our city is one of the oldest communities located in the southwest quadrant of Muskegon County, just a 10 minute drive from the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan. Our close-knit community is the proud home of just over 10,000 residents as well as national and internationally recognized businesses. Once a manufacturing community, we are excited about the possibility for re-development and growth. NeighborWorks VISTA opportunity - Community Connections Coordinator for Dwelling Place Are you a community oriented person interested in working with residents to improve quality of life in the City of Muskegon Heights, Michigan? Dwelling Place is now hiring a Community Connections Coordinator! From forming and growing strategic partnerships that will support neighborhood improvements to connecting residents with personal opportunities for growth, this position is perfect for someone interested in community organizing, neighborhood revitalization and making a difference in the lives of others. This one year AmeriCoprs VISTA position will be housed at our new Roosevelt Apartments in Muskegon Heights. The long term goal of this project is to increase the capacity of Dwelling Place to engage in new neighborhoods. Through the collection of information and establishment of a framework to be used by the property development, neighborhood revitalization, and property management staff, connections will be made to the local community which will provide the opportunity for residents to have a greater voice.
Ideal candidates will be self-directed, comfortable working with people, familiar with public speaking and have an interest in neighborhood organizing. This is a full time position for one year (08/28/2017-08/27/2018). Benefits include education award of $5, 815 upon successful completion of service (choice of education award or end of service stipend), health coverage, relocation allowance, childcare assistance (if eligible), living allowance, and training. The City of Muskegon Heights is proud to begin a Facebook series we are calling our "Monthly Small Business Spotlight!" Each month Mayor Kimberley Sims will come out to interview a small business here in our community. Our first feature is "Comforting Foods Restaurant and Catering" on Peck Street right across from City Hall! They feature American and Soul Food favorites like rib tips, mac and cheese, two kinds of corn bread, and many desserts! They are also now featuring breakfast on weekday mornings!
