Risk-limiting audits take a statistical sample of manually reviewed paper ballots and compare the results to the tabulated totals. The sample uses a formula based on the margin of the contest being audited, to calculate a sufficient sample size for audit to confirm the outcome of the election. Because the Presidential race in the General election was closer than the Democratic and Republican Presidential Primary races that were audited in March, a much larger sample will be drawn for this election. Statewide, approximately 18,000 ballots of the almost 5.6 million ballots cast will be randomly selected throughout the state. Most counties and jurisdictions in the state will have at least one ballot selected. As in the Presidential Primary pilot, those jurisdictions with more ballots will see a larger number of ballots selected.
