Property Overview

The City of Muskegon Heights has begun a fundraising campaign to acquire the former Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School Building. This building, which was actively user until July 2014, includes a library, 2 larger classrooms, 17 standard sized classrooms, an administrative office, a gym with stage, and a kitchen. The property area is two city blocks and includes a fenced-in playground. Currently the Muskegon Heights Little League football teams use a portion of the park for practice. Possible re-use ideas for this building and property include community-centered programming, recreational, child care facility, and/or training center. The Emergency Financial Manager for the Public School System has either sold almost every building within the system to private concerns or transferred property ownership to the State Land Bank. The MLK Jr. building is the best and last available building suitable for quick re-use. Therefore, the City of Muskegon Heights Council desires to acquire the former elementary school building and property for the availability and benefit of its citizens.
