Reporting to: Water Plant Lead Operator

Primary function of the job is to operate, repair, and maintain water distribution systems, pump stations, and sewer collection systems. Employees work as part of a team and are responsible for ensuring that the team meets its objectives. Employees must meet the minimum requirements, conditions of employment, and be able to successfully perform all essential duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodations.

Essential Job Functions:

The employee may be tasked with the following functions, which are not exhaustive:

  • Locate and mark underground water and sewer pipelines, service leads, valves, and manholes.
  • Install, service, repair, and test water meters.
  • Operate, install, repair, and maintain water services, including:
    • Activating service and repairing valve boxes.
    • Tapping water mains and checking water stations.
    • Inspecting contractor work and monitoring chlorine residuals.
    • Collecting bacteria samples and preparing lead sheets.
    • Checking sewer stations and inspecting sewer lines, grease traps, and manholes.
    • Repairing manholes and performing related activities.
  • Repair hydrants, water mains, and service lines.
  • Inspect cross connections in homes and businesses to prevent contamination.
  • Clean sewer wet wells, repair broken sewer lines, and clear plugged sewer lines.
  • Inspect and clean sewers and wet wells.
  • Operate portable generators, gate valves, and other equipment.
  • Oversee contractors excavating near public utilities.
  • Maintain records, logs, and as-built drawings related to daily activities.
  • Monitor and maintain supply levels for unit operations.
  • Provide customer service, delivering accurate and courteous assistance on policies and practices.

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D., 
  • Six months of experience in sewer and water system operation/maintenance preferred not required.
  • Relevant education and training may substitute for experience if knowledge and skills are demonstrated.

Certifications and Licenses:

  • Valid Michigan Operators License with CDL, Class B, including tank truck and air brake endorsements, to be obtained within three months of employment.

Conditions of Employment:

  • A background check may be required initially and periodically, including identity confirmation, criminal record review, and verification of education and licenses.
  • Appointment and continued employment are contingent upon a satisfactory background check.
  • May be required to serve in an “on-call” capacity.
  • Proficient in English (reading, writing, speaking) and MS Office (Excel, Word).

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Requires regular walking, sitting, and use of hands; must be able to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Frequently lift and move light to heavy items; navigate between worksites and climb stairs.
  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts, heavy machinery, and varying weather conditions.

Annual Salary:  $42,025.10 – $47,718.30
